Tidal is a music streaming service that promises to unite artists and fans. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed my Tidal HiFi trial membership and would feel compelled to switch streaming services if I weren’t already knee-deep in Spotify playlists. No. Audiophile-friendly but a little too limited for most, especially considering the extra cost. Excellent UI The only criticism would be that they’re much easier to browse via the web than through the desktop or mobile apps, where the full catalogue seems to be rather hidden away. The user interface is intuitive and slick. Of course, you can dial down the quality when your phone isn’t connected to Wi-Fi (there’s a button to do just that at the bottom of the ‘now playing’ screen), or activate a setting that adjusts it depending on the strength of your connection. There’s also a section for audio podcasts, but with only 13 available, it’s clear Tidal has no intention of taking on iTunes, SoundCloud or Stitcher just yet. Anything accessible from the service is also downloadable: adding a music video to a downloaded audio playlist will automatically download the music video, too. There’s a group of albums available from the main homescreen, but it’s by no means exhaustive, and there’s no way to search for only Master-quality music, or toggle the search results to show it separately from everything else. The curated and featured playlists suggestions continue for a few more thumb scrolls. You’ll find Tidal Rising through the Explore menu, with a whole range of playlists, tracks, albums and videos from up-and-coming artists. Tidal’s got it. Just below the banner is your recently played media followed by suggested new tracks and albums. That’s still better than most, but if you want the best then you’ll be better off using a wired connection to your computer (and probably investing in a decent DAC). Learn More. Tidal has cool original feature-length articles, such as "Jay-Z's Blueprint for a City's Rebirth" and "Requiem for Warped Tour," which have embedded music so you can learn more about artists while listening to their tunes. Tidal HiFi is for listeners who take their music quality seriously. The biggest drawback to its interface is the lack of voice search capabilities. How many devices can I use with one Tidal subscription? The auto-adjusted drop in quality is very noticeable when it kicks in, with everything suddenly sounding rather thin. However, Tidal lets users post individual tracks or whole playlists which appear as still images on either social platform. He now brings his knowledge and skillset to PCMag as a Managing Editor. In 2014, Tidal began life as a comically pretentious promotional video that featured Jay-Z and his musician friends touting the service as the future of streaming music due to its sound quality and artist-friendly payouts. The music catalog was similar. Additionally, if you’re someone with a large personal library of locally stored files, or find yourself addicted to podcasts, this service isn’t for you. Tidal lacks a free, ad-supported option, so you have to either pay $9.99 per month for 320Kbps AAC+ music (Tidal Premium), or $19.99 per month for non-compressed 1411Kbps FLAC audio (Tidal HiFi)—a much higher fidelity than your standard MP3 or audio stream. A huge strike against Tidal, and why I won’t switch to it from Spotify just yet, is its lack of social features. Easy artist discovery To get the most out of Tidal’s lossless streaming, it’s best to have a nice pair of headphones. $29.99/mo. It definitely does sound better than what you get from Spotify or Apple Music, with more detail and texture to the tracks, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s twice-as-much-per-month better. Animations between menus and the playback module are smooth; I rarely experienced any lag. Tidal has dozens upon dozens of themed playlists that are categorized by moods, time of day, and events, such as Coachella. I've found popular artists like Arcade Fire, Michael Jackson, and Led Zeppelin, as well as indie faves, such as The Dirtbombs and Harlem.
